The SAWCorp CWD test requires a sample of the harvested animal’s blood collected with a blood sample card. Allow blood samples to air dry completely before shipping, but do not dry them in direct sunlight or in a plastic bag. When collecting, packaging and submitting samples for testing, is critical to eliminate cross contamination. Please follow these simple steps to improve accuracy of test results:
In the “Name” space of the blood card, write your phone number and, if sending two samples, either #1 or #2. You may also add a brief description (“Bill’s doe”,etc). Your phone number will be used to track your sample. Add the date the sample was collected.
Open the blood card. There are five circles printed on the sample paper. Three of these circles need to have a blood sample. The blood can be collected from the animal’s wound or by making a new incision. As blood collects on the site of the wound or incision, touch the blood card to the blood. The included cotton swab can also be used to collect and transfer the blood from the animal to the card. It’s okay if the absorbed blood goes over the edges of the circle, but don’t collect so much blood that the card be comes soggy or over-saturated–it will take longer to dry.Two or three heavy drops of blood per circle is usually enough.
Next, bend the top flap of the card up so that the sample is exposed to the air. Allow the blood to dry. If you are collecting samples from two deer or elk, be sure not to let the blood samples touch – this is a possible source of cross contamination. Do not dry the blood cards in direct sunlight, which can damage the samples.
Once dry, fold over the top flap to seal the blood card. Put each
blood card in a separate foil storage envelope and seal the envelope.
Complete the Sample Submission Form. Be sure that the phone number written on the blood cards match the phone numbers on the Submission Form. Add the brief description.
Put the Sample Submision Form and the samples in foil envelopes inside the pre-addressed, postage paid mailer and drop it in the nearest mailbox when complete.
All samples MUST include the UNITED STATES VETERINARY
PERMIT that is enclosed in the prepaid return envelope.
